Larry was born in Iowa City, Iowa, and moved with his family to Washington State in 1953, when his father was hired to work for the Boeing B-52 project. Larry graduated from Federal Way High School in 1969. He has pursued his education, his profession, and his political career within the state to which he has dedicated his life.

After graduating from Pacific Lutheran University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Liberal Arts, Larry moved to the Tri-Cities to begin his professional career with United Nuclear Corporation. Over the next 30 years, as his professional life progressed, he became increasingly aware of the need for stronger leadership in the local political area. By 1989 Larry made the decision to run for public office and waged a successful campaign for a seat on the Richland City Council. His accomplishments in governance since that time are listed in the accomplishments information.

While following his career and simultaneously serving elected terms as Council member and Mayor for the City of Richland, Larry completed his Master Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from City University in 2001. Today, Larry Haler works for the Mission Support Alliance as a Communications Specialist in External Affairs.

Larry has shared more than three decades of life and work in Richland with his wife Jenifer (Leitz) Haler. Jenifer was an elementary school teacher in the Richland School District from 1974 until her retirement in 2004. In 2003 she was selected one of two "Outstanding Educators" in the city of West Richland. A life long Richland resident, Jenifer's ancestry includes one of eastern Washington States' Pioneer families, the Leitz family, listed as a "Centennial Farm" family who settled the Palouse region of our state. They are members of Richland Lutheran Church where currently they lead a growth group and Jenifer teaches yoga.
