Representative Larry Haler recently returned from the National Symposium on Early Childhood Science and Policy, held at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Representative Haler was selected to attend the symposium as the Republican representative from the House of Representatives. In his role as Ranking Member on the Early Learning and Children's Services Committee, Larry's influence on Washington State's children can be felt in such initiatives as the new full-day kindergarden and state preschool standards. Also attending the 2-day conference from Washington State were Representative Ruth Kagi, Senator Claudia Kauffman and Senator Curtis King.

"Recent brain research and educational studies being conducted tell us what is and what isn't helpful to the development of preschool children. We heard from people who are the experts in the field of childhood development and early childhood education. We also learned from policy-makers in other states what is and isn't working for kids in their states," Representative Haler shared.

Representative Haler took a lead role in the creation of the Department of Early Childhood Learning, a public / private partnership, during the 2007 legislative session.

Looking forward to the legislative assembly days in September, Larry stated,
"I am eager to share with my collegues in the state legislature what I learned at this national symposium so policies that we develop in the State of Washington improve the lives of our children and give our state a brighter tomorrow."
